Set atop a rugged ocean bluff, this single-story residence is as much an engineering accomplishment as it is an architectural statement. Exposed structural steel is both the aesthetic and functional backbone of the home, carrying the weight of the expansive roof and framing massive openings for floor-to-ceiling glass.
The living roof, lush with vegetation, required precise structural calculations to support the additional load of saturated soil and plant life—without compromising the home’s clean, low-profile design. Above the main living spaces, a continuous clerestory floods the interior with daylight while contributing to the lateral stability of the structure.
Engineered openings for large retractable glass walls demanded careful consideration of wind loads and coastal exposure. The result is a home that seamlessly opens to the elements while maintaining structural integrity in a challenging marine environment.
